Welcome! These "paintings in paper" or "Paper Paintings" as they are sometimes
called, are exactly that... paper. There is everything from handmade papers to newspapers used in these pieces
to create my color palette. NO PAINT... other than maybe bits of some hand painted papers that are used.
I start with a prepared surface of either canvas board, chipboard, or heavy weight watercolor paper, depending on the size
piece I'm working on. A simple sketch is done first and then a very light under painting to establish my color scheme. From
there it is all paper. I work with a matte gel medium to layer in all my papers. The paper is also mostly torn as opposed to
cut in order to give it a more natural feel. I only cut for areas I have to. The paper is layered from the background to foreground
and is done a little at a time in stages... hence, a very time consuming process. In the end the entire piece is coated over
with the gel medium to add strength and protection. click to enlarge images |
